Nursing is such an exciting field with a lot of opportunities. Whichever school and program you\u2019ve chosen, it can be a challenge. There is a lot of information to learn, but we can help make sure your first aid &amp; CPR courses are fun, stress-free and affordable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recent Changes in First Aid Requirements for Nursing Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been some changes recently in the healthcare\nfield regarding CPR training. Previously, nursing students and nurses took CPR\nLevel HCP (Health Care Provider). This course was similar to CPR Level C, and\ntaught CPR for the lay rescuer, as well as adding some additional skills such\nas using a bag-valve-mask, jaw thrusts and assisted ventilation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CPR Level HCP was phased out by the Canadian Red Cross early in 2019, and has been replaced by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/courses\/first-aid-courses\/bls\">Basic Life Support (BLS)<\/a><\/strong> program. This brand-new program is not simply just a replacement. CPR Level HCP teaches basic CPR. The new BLS program does not. BLS is designed for people like you who will respond as part of their professional duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"687\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/BLS-1030x687.jpg\" alt=\"Basic Life Support (BLS) for Nursing Students\" class=\"wp-image-501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/BLS-1030x687.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/BLS-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/BLS-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><figcaption>Red Cross Instructors demonstrating Basic Life Support skills taught in class.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BLS is based on international standards, and trains\nprofessionals, including nurses, to work seamlessly with other professionals\n(nurses, doctors, paramedics, etc.), even if they have never met, let alone\nhave worked together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other new programs introduced at the same time are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/courses\/first-aid-courses\/oxygen-therapy\">Oxygen Therapy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/courses\/first-aid-courses\/airway-management\">Airway Managemen<\/a>t<\/strong>. These are both designed to be either standalone courses, or added on to Basic Life Support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alert First-Aid teaches courses in Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo\nand Vancouver, which means we\u2019re very familiar with the courses required by the\nfollowing schools:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Camosun College<\/li><li>University of Victoria (UVic)<\/li><li>Sprott Shaw College<\/li><li>Vancouver Island University (VIU)<\/li><li>BCIT<\/li><li>Vancouver Community College<\/li><li>University of British Columbia (UBC)<\/li><li>Kwantlen Polytechnic University<\/li><li>Langara College<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, each program is very similar \u2013 see below for first aid &amp; CPR course requirements in each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Year Nursing Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most nursing students will need to take Standard First Aid,\nalong with Basic Life Support, Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy prior to\nthe first day of classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make this registration process a little easier and more affordable for you, we\u2019ve packaged them all into a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/courses\/first-aid-courses\/first-year-nursing-student-package\">First Aid for First Year Nursing Students<\/a><\/strong> bundle! This way, you only have to register once, and will finish with all the certificates you need to start your nursing school journey off right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standard First Aid Training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian Red Cross Standard First-Aid &amp; CPR Level C course is a fun and interactive two day course that will train you to react and improvise when dealing with time priority, life threatening emergencies. This course includes initial assessment, disease prevention, secondary survey, airway obstruction, adult, child, and infant CPR (Level C) as well as the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Recognition and first aid treatment for head and spine injuries, shock, burns, bleeding, seizures, broken bones, anaphylactic shock, small wound management, poisoning, heat exhaustion and heat stroke will also be addressed. You &nbsp;will spend the majority of the course doing hands on first-aid, and participating in first-aid scenarios. By practicing with scenarios, you\u2019ll gain confidence, and learn to improvise in emergency situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic Life Support (BLS) Training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Basic Life Support (BLS) is the recognition and initial intervention or treatment given by pre-hospital or in-facility responders (like nurses) to a patient suffering from cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. The BLS curriculum truly supports the delivery of high performance, team-based professional-level resuscitation. Our BLS course is industry-driven, designed as a robust resuscitation training program geared toward high-quality CPR in a team environment, and recognizes the nuances of multidisciplinary teams with varied experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oxygen Therapy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This Oxygen Therapy course will teach you how to properly and safely handle and assemble oxygen equipment, and how to deliver supplemental oxygen through the appropriate delivery device. It will cover opening the mouth, cross finger technique, airway adjuncts \u2013 insertion and removal, nasopharyngeal (NPA) airways, suction, tongue-jaw lift, oropharyngeal (OPA) airways, and supraglottic airways (awareness only).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"687\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/AirwayManagement-1030x687.jpg\" alt=\"Airway Management for Nursing Students\" class=\"wp-image-502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/AirwayManagement-1030x687.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/AirwayManagement-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/AirwayManagement-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.alertfirstaid.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/AirwayManagement.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><figcaption>Canadian Red Cross Instructors demonstrating Airway Management skills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Second &amp; Third Year Nursing Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve already made it to your second or third year of\nnursing school, you\u2019ve already taken Standard First Aid \u2013 and that certificate\nis valid for three years, so you\u2019re off the hook on that one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Basic Life Support course will need to be recertified every year while you\u2019re in school, and often every year while you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.jooble.org\/jobs-first-aid-nurse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working as a nurse<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basic Life Support certification is only valid for one year,\nhowever, even when nursing students just needed to take CPR Level C or CPR\nLevel HCP, they still needed to re-take the course every year to keep their\nskills current. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new BLS recertification course is nice and short \u2013 only\n2 hours \u2013 and will provide you with everything you need to stay current,\nwithout having to stay another 2 hours to re-learn basic CPR skills. This\nrecertification will be offered starting in 2020, once this year\u2019s BLS\ncertifications expire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in your 2<sup>nd<\/sup> or 3<sup>rd<\/sup> year of\nnursing school in 2019, you\u2019ll be taking your first cycle of Basic Life\nSupport, Oxygen Therapy, and Airway Management \u2013 but don\u2019t worry, next year you\ncan take the shorter course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Professional Development While Nursing <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve finished your nursing program and are working\nout in the real world as a nurse, most employers will still require you to\nrecertify your Basic Life Support certification every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that CPR knowledge and skills decrease\nover time, even among nurses and other professionals. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3372042\/\">this study<\/a>, 2\nyears after training, knowledge and skills have decreased to almost the same\nscores nurses had prior to the training session.
