FAQs

What does CPR Level C mean?

CPR Level C is the most comprehensive "lay rescuer" CPR, encompassing basic CPR, AED usage, and essential life-saving techniques applicable to adults, children, and infants. If you're not a professional responder or a healthcare professional in a clinical setting, CPR C is typically sufficient to meet employer CPR certification requirements. Alert First Aid offers CPR C and CPR recertification as standalone courses. Moreover, CPR C is an integral component of our primary first-aid courses, including Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, and Marine First Aid. Most individuals acquire their CPR C certification within the context of these broader first aid courses. However, it's essential to note that our Worksafe BC Occupational First Aid courses, specifically tailored for workplace first aid, do not include CPR C. If you're enrolled in one of our Occupational First Aid courses and need CPR C certification, please contact our office to arrange inclusion for a reasonable fee.

What is difference between Emergency first aid course and a Standard First Aid course?

In summary, Emergency First Aid course is a one-day course, while Standard First Aid is a more extensive two-day program. The Emergency First Aid course prioritizes essential skills for addressing severe, life-threatening injuries such as choking, CPR with AED, and controlling severe bleeding. Standard First Aid, encompassing all Emergency First Aid content, delves further into additional knowledge topics not covered in the shorter course. These include Head & Neck Injuries, Poisoning, Environmental Emergencies, and a more detailed exploration of managing minor injuries and wounds. The extended duration also provides more time for hands-on practice, allowing participants to build confidence in applying their first aid skills effectively. Both Standard and Emergency First Aid courses are acknowledged as acceptable equivalents to OFA Level 1. If a job specifically requires Emergency First Aid course, Standard First Aid is considered an acceptable alternative, ensuring flexibility for individuals seeking appropriate certification for various employment requirements.

How long does it take to get CPR and first aid certified?

The duration of our first aid courses varies depending on the specific certification you require. The majority of our first aid courses, all of which include CPR training, can typically be completed in a single day in the classroom. For instance, both Standard First Aid and Marine First Aid certifications are 2-day courses, but they are available in a blended format, allowing one of those days to be completed online. Courses are regularly offered at our Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, and Duncan locations, providing convenient options for quick certification. If you need a responder-level course for your workplace, OFA Level 2 is a 5-day program, while OFA Level 3 is a more extensive 10-day course spread over two weeks. We strive to offer flexible and accessible training options to meet a variety of scheduling needs.

How long is an emergency first aid certificate valid for?

Emergency First Aid expires after 3 years, so you will need to recertify the Emergency First Aid every 3 years to keep it maintained.

What is Emergency First Aid course with CPR AED C?

The Emergency First Aid course offered by Alert First Aid is a fundamental one-day program dedicated to imparting essential life-saving skills and knowledge. This certification meets the minimum requirement for many employment positions, although some employers may mandate the more extensive 2-day Standard First Aid certification. Notably, WorkSafe BC recognizes the Red Cross Emergency First Aid certificate as equivalent to OFA Level 1. The CPR C component of the course encompasses CPR training for adults, children, and infants, making it the highest level of CPR for lay rescuers. Additionally, all CPR courses, including CPR C, cover the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED), eliminating the need for separate AED training. The course covers crucial topics such as Scene Assessment, Primary Assessment, Clearing an Obstructed Airway, CPR with AED for various age groups, Breathing and Circulation Emergencies, Controlling Severe Bleeds, and Basic Minor Wound Management. This comprehensive training equips participants with the necessary skills to respond effectively to a range of emergencies.

Can I get first aid certified online?

To obtain first aid certification through Alert First Aid, you can take advantage of our blended learning format, which applies to Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Marine Basic First Aid, and standalone CPR C courses. This unique approach allows you to complete the theoretical "knowledge lessons" online, significantly reducing the in-classroom time required for these courses by half. However, it's important to note that first aid certification cannot be issued unless at least half of the total course time is spent in the classroom. This ensures that an instructor can guide you through practical skills, evaluate your proficiency, and certify that you can competently perform these critical skills in real-life situations.

Do online first aid courses count?

If you need first aid certification for your workplace or a community role, it's important to note that fully online first aid courses are generally not considered valid for most purposes in BC. At Alert First Aid, we offer legitimate Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Marine Basic First Aid, and standalone CPR C courses in a blended format. This means you can complete the essential "knowledge lessons" online, effectively cutting the in-classroom time in half. However, certification cannot be issued unless at least half of the total course duration is spent in the classroom. This requirement ensures that our instructors can guide you through practical skills, assess your proficiency, and certify that you are capable of performing these crucial skills effectively, meeting the standards necessary for workplace and community certifications.
