An N95 respirator is a mask that is designed to form a very close fit around the face, which results in very efficient filtration of airborne particles when compared to a looser-fitting mask like an earloop/surgical mask or cloth mask. The edges of the respirator are designed to form a seal around the nose and mouth, preventing leakage around the edges when the user inhales. Because of this, an N95 mask will effectively protect the wearer from airbone particles, while a cloth or earloop mask is more effective at protecting those around the wearer.
All N95 masks are evaluated, tested, and approved by NIOSH as per the requirements in 42 CFR Part 84.
