This is the full First Aid & CPR Instructor course, and includes Steps 1, 2 & 3 as outlined below. You will still need to complete a Teaching Experience before becoming fully certified.

INSTRUCTOR PATHWAY

Step 1: Evaluate skills and check prerequisites

Instructor candidates must be 18 years or older, have a valid Standard First Aid participant certificate, have successfully completed a First Aid & CPR Instructor skills evaluation with a Teaching Experience Supervisor or Instructor Trainer. If you do not have a Skills Evaluation Form to submit to your Instructor Trainer, you will also have to register for the First Aid & CPR Skills Evaluation.

Step 2: Fundamentals of Instruction

The next step in the instructor pathway is the Fundamentals of Instruction course, which consists of an 8-hour online module followed by a 2-day in-class module. Transfer Option 2:  If you are currently a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, you may skip the in-class portion of this course - please check out the Instructor Transfer Option 2.

Step 3: First Aid & CPR Discipline-Specific

The First Aid & CPR Discipline-Specific module consists of two days in class and microteach assignments that you'll receive ahead of time. Transfer Option 1: If you are already a Red Cross Instructor in another discipline (Wilderness or Professional Responder), you may skip this step - please check out the Instructor Transfer Option 1.

Step 4: Teaching Experience

The last step in the certification process is to complete a Teaching Experience online module (30-45 min) and a classroom component with the support of a Teaching Experience Supervisor.

Step 5: Certification

Once certified as an instructor, you will need to work with a Red Cross Training Agency to process participant certifications.

FAQs

How do I become a First Aid trainer?

All you need to get started is to have Red Cross certification in first aid at the level you want to teach! The pathway to becoming a Red Cross First Aid Instructor is a flexible one that takes into account existing qualifications and previous experience if you have it. The instructor training process has several components (both online and classroom based, for a total of about 40 hours) and finally you must successfully teach a course with another experienced instructor. Alert First Aid is a designated Red Cross Instructor Development Centre. We offer Instructor Training for First Aid, Wilderness First Aid and Professional Responder Candidates. Please give our office a call if you are interested in becoming an instructor, and we will help you navigate the Instructor Training process, and perhaps bypass some components of the process if you have any applicable qualifications.

How much does it cost to become a CPR instructor?

The cost of our Canadian Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructor course is $900, tax included. You can also arrange to do your final teaching experience with one of our CPR Instructors for an additional charge or you can arrange this on your own. Also if you currently teach Canadian Red Cross Water Safety courses or CPR for another agency then you may be eligible to bypass some parts of the process, and reduce the cost of your Instructor Course. Please give our office a call if you have any questions about any part of the instructor training process.

Certification

An electronic certification will be issued upon completion. Certified instructors can teach Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Marine Basic First Aid, Emergency Child Care First Aid, Standard Child Care First Aid and CPR courses. Certification is valid for 3 years.

Nathan was awesome. I had very little sleep as I have PTSD and have a difficult time learning, especially on 3 hours sleep. But he made it make sense, completely memorable and easy for me.

Erin Gray Emergency First-Aid, Victoria, BC More Testimonials

I have always done St. John Ambulance first aid training. This course was taught differently but was more effective due to more hands on training. I will definitely return to Alert First Aid for my re-certification. Thank you!!
